I love this time of year, when sticky-sweet holiday movies play on television 24/7 and the house is dressed up with ribbons and twinkling lights. But I really love combing through my oldest recipes and seeing my grandmothers’ handwriting again. It never fails to make me smile.
Most Christmas holidays, my grandparents would make the trek from Michigan bearing all sorts of goodies. They’d bring presents, of course, but they would also bring fresh baked nut bread and spritz cookies, Win Schuler’s bar cheese, Vernor’s ginger ale and Kogel’s ring bologna.
Now, I always think of them as I bake for friends, making treats that are special to me and bring back these memories of wonderful moments with family.
