Mangia! It’s Pastry Time in Boston

This decadent lobster tail doesn’t come to the table with a vat of drawn butter and a bib.

In Boston’s bustling North End, lines form outside pastry shops and passersby carry string-tied and white-boxed bundles of freshly baked sweets. Mike’s Pastry is a cash and carry (and eat on the sidewalk) iconic stop for visitors to the city, but right next door is my preferred destination for lingering over dessert.

Push through the heavy glass doors and into the tantalizing scents of coffee and sugar. Caffé Vittoria is steeped in old-fashioned charm and neighborly tradition. Vintage espresso machines and coffee pots line the walls, while bistro tables and chairs are snugged in for cozy camaraderie and lively chatter amongst friends.

With a menu of specialty coffee drinks and cocktails to suit your fancy, Caffé Vittoria offers an array of classic Italian desserts from tiramisu, to fresh-filled cannoli, sfogliattelle and napoleotane.

But the lobster tail is something to taste and savor. (Mind you, one lobster tail is enough for several guests. Some people dive right in to conquer it!) This concoction is dusted with confectioner’s sugar over layer upon layer of flaky pastry surrounding a decadent three-cheese filling.

Taste and linger then top off your dessert with a glass of Zambuca topped with coffee beans.

Be prepared:     Caffe Vittoria does not accept credit cards. Cash only.
