It’s Friday night, and that means I’m wishing I were back at Round Pond Estate and its Sunset Lounge where sipping fantastic wine by the fire with friends gives you a perfect excuse to watch a California Napa sunset over acres of rolling grapevines.
But let’s keep the focus of this article squarely where it belongs – on the superior quality of Round Pond wines. The fact that if you visit you’ll taste and enjoy their wines in a setting where every detail has been carefully considered and executed is an added bonus. The real stars at Round Pond show their true colors in crystal glasses.
Round Pond Estate is located in Rutherford, with its tasting lounge and state-of-the-art barrel aging rooms situated at the end of a long drive lined with towering palm trees. With grapevines sustainably farmed and rich with decades of tradition, the family-owned vineyard is committed to organic growing methods and hand blending and bottling of each vintage. In my opinion, the vintners at Round Pond are artisans in the truest sense of the word, and we’ll learn more about their methods in a later post.
Round Pond is quickly gaining a reputation for its award-winning wines and gourmet products such as olive oils, fruit syrups and vinegars (much more about those in a later post . . .). The Estate caters to the consumer with an appreciative palate for exceptional food and wine and understands the critical interrelationship of these two elements of cuisine. But don’t be worried. You won’t find snobbery here. Instead, you’ll find warmth and a friendly invitation to try each wine and gourmet product until you discover your absolute favorites. So take your time and savor. . .
For me, the favored vintage is the 2010 Estate Sauvignon Blanc, a complex, multi-layered white that complements any number of elegant hors d’oeuvres and entrees. Redolent of ripe fruit and hinting of floral notes, the Sauvignon Blanc is crisp, fresh and memorable.
My husband, a lover of full-bodied red wines, prefers the 2008 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, a blend of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon. With definitive fruity characteristics and hints of spice, this beautiful red stands on its own. When it’s paired with a seared steak and grilled asparagus — perfection.
Round Pond Estate is open for tours, twilight tastings, al fresco lunches and more. Simply call the concierge ahead to discuss your personalized options and reserve your time. When you visit, inquire about club membership for members-only releases, events and door-to-door shipments. And here’s another great reason to become part of the Round Pond family – club memberships can be tailored to your preferences for wine and gourmet products.
By all means, earmark a few bottles (or cases) of Round Pond wine to keep and enjoy at home. You and your friends will be glad you did from the moment of your very first sip.
