San Jose’s Japantown is a quiet enclave of tree-lined streets of Japanese influenced businesses, residential properties and specialty service establishments.
On the corner of Jackson Street and 4th Street, SJ Omogari Korean Restaurant is a great place for a casual and inexpensive lunch or dinner – especially on Mondays when the rest of Japantown shuts down.
We tried the pan-fried pork filled pot stickers and a platter of fried tofu. The tofu was lightly golden on the outside, and moist and flavorful on the inside. But the accompanying sauce was complex and interesting to the palate.
Here is my version:
Tofu and Dumpling Dipping Sauce
1/2 cup soy sauce
2 Tablespoons white vinegar
2 Tablespoons chili oil
1/2 teaspoon chili powder (or more to taste)
1 Tablespoon sesame seeds
2 Tablespoons green onion, chopped
Combine all ingredients except green onion in small bowl and whisk until blended.
Portion into small dishes and top with chopped green onion just before serving.
