If you know superstar food personality Guy Fieri, you might expect his restaurants to offer a glimpse into his bold style, friendly demeanor and love for rocking food. You’d be right. Tex Wasabi’s in Santa Rosa is fun, lively and delicious. Developed in partnership with company CEO Steve Gruber, Fieri’s restaurant is a destination in this laid back California town.
After more than a year under wraps, the restaurant just reopened with a fresh new look and sassy design of exposed brick, glass sculptures and bursts of vibrant color. Tex Wasabi’s offers a wild menu of southern barbecue and sushi. You read that right. BBQ and Asian influence rest side by side on the same fusion menu. Strangely, the combination works brilliantly, but it requires an open culinary mind.
I recommend starting with more delicate flavors and building toward the bold. The Sashimi Won Tacos are whimsical, light and sweet with sashimi grade ahi and pineapple salsa. Drizzled with sweet soy, wasabi cream and eel sauce, the mini wonton “tacos” are a great way to start the meal.
We also tried the California crunchy roll, big bite slices of toasted sesame seeds, avodaco, cucumber and kanikama dipped in tempura batter and flash fried to a golden crisp. With a drizzle of eel sauce, it was presented beautifully and served with daikon sprouts and accompanying citrus infused house made soy sauce.
For the BBQ round, we ordered pork slyders on soft white rolls. In multiples of three you can order these mini sandwiches of pulled pork tossed with crispy slaw and dressed in one of Guy Fieri’s signature BBQ sauces. If this dish is all you order at Tex Wasabi’s, you’ll go home happy. Though we tried the Bourbon Brown Sugar and Carolina #6 sauces, I favored the thick, smoky and sweet Kansas City variety. (Fieri’s signature barbecue sauces are now for sale at select stores nationwide.)
After a nice rest, we wrapped up the meal by drifting back to the Asian side of the menu for Killer Egg Rolls of marinated chicken, cabbage, bean sprouts, carrots, ginger, onion and garlic with a Thai chili sauce. Full-flavored and light, these egg rolls have a fantastic flaky crust.
Choose one side of the menu, or blend the two. Your Savor the Salt bottom line: Tex Wasabi’s is fun.
