Tucked into an unassuming strip mall in Campbell, California is a donut shop like no other. Meet Psycho Donuts, the witty brainchild of founder Jordan Zweigororn and co-owner Web Granger. Open since 2009, the shop has survived community protests and risen to national fame.
With its irreverent in-your-face attitude and wicked sense of humor, counter staff in nurse uniforms hand out squares of bubble wrap to pop while deciding your donut fate. Looking for a quick read while munching? Pick up store copies of Surviving Bipolar’s Fatal Grip. In the mood to appreciate? Check out funky original art hanging the space or scope fun gifts like the Bacon Lip Balm or Thumb Wrestling Arena. Care to get your groove on? Step into the costume booth and meet your alter-ego.
Whatever your take on the shop’s cheeky attitude, Psycho delivers a dose of wild eats. These crazy donuts are not your normal garden variety sweets. On any given day, they may serve up Psycho Passionata, Bananarama, Apricotology, Razveganpucker or any number of decadent, voluptuous chocolate concoctions. Chef Ron Levi whips up monthly and holiday specials, along with donuts certified to please the Vegan crowd.
Heavy, rich and oh-so-flavorful, these anytime treats are sure to make a bold impression. Check out the Cereal Killer, described as “Ted Bundy? Jack the Ripper? They got nothing’ on this Cap’n Crunchberries™ donut.” Or how about Nose and Eyeballs, which is touted as “Custard filled body parts give new meaning to ‘eye popping’ and “I’ve got your nose!’ Covered with powdered sugar, they’re not too sweet.”
My favorite treat? A big cup of iced coffee with a Strawberry TacOnut, glazed and oozing with fresh whipped cream and luscious strawberries. Yum!
